Choosing a DTF printer
Direct-to-film prints the design onto PET film in colour, lays a layer of white ink behind it, and coats the wet ink with hot-melt powder. A heat press then moves the whole print onto the garment. Because the white is printed rather than relied on from the fabric, the same transfer works on black cotton, polyester and blends, with no screens, no pretreatment and no minimum run.
Width and head count decide output. A 13-inch desktop machine with one head suits samples and small brands. A 24-inch machine with two heads is where most shops start printing gang sheets for themselves, and four heads roughly double the output again for shops selling transfers by the foot. Ask for the speed at the pass count you will actually print, not the draft figure.
White ink is the running cost and the maintenance item that matters. It settles if it sits still, so look for white circulation and stirring, and plan to print every day or run the cleaning routine. A shaker that powders and cures inline is what lets the printer run unattended.
