Choosing a UV flatbed printer
A UV flatbed prints straight onto the object. The item lies on the bed, the head passes over it laying white, colour and optionally varnish, and LED UV lamps on the carriage cure the ink as it lands, so the piece is dry and ready to pack the moment it comes off. Phone cases, acrylic and wood signs, metal plaques, glass, tiles and leather all print with no transfer step.
Bed size and head decide the work a machine suits. A 16 × 24 in bed with an Epson DX5 head is a personalisation machine for one-offs and short runs. A 24 × 35 in bed takes full trays of small items and whole signs, and an industrial Epson i3200 head prints it faster and stands up to longer days. Two heads give white or varnish a head of its own and cut the time per bed again.
White ink is the running cost to watch: a full white underbase uses several times the ink of the colour on top. Look for white circulation and stirring, and check the maximum item height against the thickest thing you plan to print. Textiles are the one thing a UV flatbed is not for; for garments, a DTF printer is the right tool.
