A wide-format roll printer is what makes a sign shop, wrap installer or print-for-trade business. Prices range from about $4,000 to over $30,000. The difference comes down to width, the number and type of printheads, the ink system and the brand name on the side.

Wide-format printer prices

Class Typical price (delivered) Suits
64–72 in eco-solvent, one F1080 head $4,000–$6,000 Starting sign shops, low volume
64–72 in eco-solvent, one i3200 head $5,000–$8,000 Everyday banners, posters and decals
72–78 in, two i3200 heads $8,000–$15,000 Production, wraps, two rolls at once
UV roll-to-roll, 64–72 in $8,000–$15,000 Uncoated media, instant-dry work
Brand-name print-and-cut $15,000–$30,000+ Integrated contour cutting

What drives the price

  • Printheads. Epson F1080 heads cost less and suit lighter work. Epson i3200 heads print about twice as fast. Each extra head adds speed.
  • Width. 72–78 in covers standard wrap films and 6 ft banners in one pass.
  • Heating and drying. Front, middle and rear heaters dry eco-solvent ink as it prints, so rolls can go to the laminator sooner.
  • Head care. Automatic capping, cleaning and moisturising protect heads when the printer is idle. Power-loss protection matters where the power drops.
  • Two-roll printing. A wide printer that runs two narrower rolls side by side prints two jobs at once.

Running costs

Eco-solvent ink is among the cheapest inks per square foot, and the heads are reliable if the printer prints daily or sits capped. Budget for media, lamination film and replacement wipers and dampers. Run a room at 59–86 °F with 40–60% humidity, and ventilate it, as eco-solvent ink gives off a mild odour. Most of these printers draw 2–7 kW for printing and heating, on 220V.

Common questions

How much does a wide-format eco-solvent printer cost?
Entry 64 to 72-inch eco-solvent printers with one head cost roughly $4,000 to $8,000 delivered; two-head production machines $8,000 to $15,000; brand-name printers with integrated cutting $15,000 to $30,000 and up.
What can a wide-format eco-solvent printer print?
Vinyl, banners, vehicle wraps, window graphics, posters, backlit film, canvas and wallpaper, mostly for signs and graphics. It does not print garments.
Eco-solvent or UV roll printer: which is better?
Eco-solvent costs less to buy and run and is the standard for wraps and vinyl that is laminated. UV ink cures instantly with no outgassing, prints on a wider range of uncoated media and suits work that must be handled or finished straight away.
Do I need a laminator and cutter too?
For vehicle wraps and outdoor graphics, a laminator protects prints from scratches and UV fading. A vinyl cutter or print-and-cut plotter is needed for contour-cut decals and lettering.
