UV printers cure ink with ultraviolet light the moment it lands. That is why they can print on almost any hard surface: acrylic, wood, metal, glass, leather and plastic. There are three kinds, and their prices differ a lot.

UV printer prices at a glance

Type Typical price (delivered) What it prints
Small UV flatbed (about 16 × 24 in) $8,000–$12,000 Phone cases, pens, awards, small gifts
Mid-size UV flatbed (24 × 35 in) $11,000–$18,000 Signs, panels, batches of small items
UV DTF printer, 24-inch $12,000–$20,000 Stickers and transfers for tumblers, glass, packaging
UV roll-to-roll, 60–72 in $8,000–$15,000 Banners, wallpaper, backlit film, soft signage

What decides the price

  • Bed or print width. Bigger beds and wider rolls cost more to build and ship.
  • Printheads. Epson DX5-class heads give fine detail at a lower machine price. Epson i3200-U1 heads are faster production heads, and each extra head adds speed and more ink channels.
  • Ink channels. CMYK + white is the base. Varnish adds gloss and raised effects, and needs its own head or channel.
  • Extras. Vacuum beds, positioning cameras, rotary attachments for bottles, water-cooled UV lamps and built-in laminators all add to the price.
  • Freight and duty. A crated flatbed weighs 450–600 lb. Ex-works prices leave sea freight, customs and US duty to you.

For signs and large graphics, the PH-UVR170 prints 67-inch rolls with UV ink at up to 97 ft² an hour, for $9,490 delivered.

Running costs

UV ink costs more per litre than DTF or eco-solvent ink, but each item uses very little. A phone case or tumbler wrap usually takes cents of ink. The hidden cost is printheads. White UV ink must circulate, and the printer should print or run a cleaning cycle every day. See what a UV printer can print on for the materials and products that pay best.

Common questions

How much does a UV flatbed printer cost?
Small desktop-class UV flatbeds start at a few thousand dollars. Business machines with a 16 × 24 in or 24 × 36 in bed typically cost $9,000 to $16,000 delivered, and larger production flatbeds cost $30,000 and up.
What does a UV DTF printer cost?
A 12-inch UV DTF printer typically costs $5,000 to $10,000; a 24-inch machine with a built-in laminator and three heads typically costs $12,000 to $20,000.
Is a UV printer expensive to run?
UV ink costs more per litre than DTF or eco-solvent ink, but it is laid down thin and cures instantly, so ink per item is usually small: often cents for a phone case or a tumbler wrap. Keep white ink circulating and the printer used daily to avoid head costs.
Which UV printer is best for a small business?
For flat items like phone cases, signs, awards and gifts, a 24 × 35 in flatbed. For tumblers, glass and curved or odd-shaped items, a UV DTF printer, whose transfers apply by hand to almost any hard surface.
